Why a cranked handle

The crank sets the lever clear of the frame face, so your knuckles clear the profile and the handle turns comfortably even where the sash sits flush in a corner. The base carries a key lock, required practice for ground-floor and accessible windows, and useful everywhere for child safety.

The locking gear

Espagnolette locking runs a rod through the sash edge with multiple locking points, sized to the sash, so taller openers carry more points. Combined with the internal glazing bead (the glass can't be removed from outside) and the option of laminated glass, it's a solid security package as standard.

Hinges and fire escapes

• Side-hung sashes hang on friction hinges that hold the sash at any opening angle. Every side opener has egress (fire escape) hinges as standard, with a choice of standard friction or restrictor hinges (+£15 per opener). Restrictor hinges can be chosen on fire escape windows too.
• Top-hung vents hang on friction stays too, for controllable night ventilation
• The designer's fire escape option sizes the clear opening to Building Regulations (at least 0.33m² and 450mm in each direction)
• All hardware is fitted and adjusted at the factory; windows arrive ready to hang

What handles and locks cost

White and black handles cost nothing extra. Other finishes and the lock upgrade are priced per opening sash, so a window with two openers pays twice. Here is what each adds today on two windows, with each window's total; each total opens the designer at that window with that option picked.

As standard, each window is: Full Side Opener, an opening window, 600 × 900mm overall, white inside and out, double glazed (28mm), clear glass, 150mm cill, trickle vents: 2000 (300mm), white handles, standard key-locking espag lock; and Classic Combination, an opening window, 1200 × 1200mm overall, white inside and out, double glazed (28mm), clear glass, 150mm cill, trickle vents: 2000 (300mm), white handles, standard key-locking espag lock. Choosing a finish

White suits white and cream frames; black is the natural pick on anthracite, black and woodgrain foils; chrome, gold and satin dress any colour. Handles are chosen per window in the designer and priced per opener, so a mixed order can match hardware room by room.

What is an espagnolette lock?

A rod-operated multi-point lock running through the sash edge: turning the handle throws several locking points into the frame at once, rather than one latch at the handle position.

Do fixed windows have handles?

No, fixed panes have no opening sash, so no hardware. Handles price per opener, so an all-fixed window carries no handle cost.

Can the hinges hold the window open in wind?

Friction stays hold the sash at the angle you set it, with the friction adjustable at installation. Top-hung vents are particularly stable for night ventilation.
